Little Sun Shine for Indian SPV Manufactures

Finally a breather for domestic solar industry in India, India’s Department of Commerce has accepted a request from Indian manufacturers to investigate anti-dumping against Chinese solar panels, this is a welcoming step on part of GOI as the domestic industry has been facing heat from Chinese products and was unable to reap benefits it deserved from govt’s solar programs.

Indian manufacturers have a good overseas customer base owing toits quality, but of late the debt crisis in Europe and inflow of cheaper material from China put the industry under pressure as prices went south. However it may hardly affect China as India account for just 10% of its exports for panels, still it will be a boon to local manufacturer who were raising concerns for quite some time, also Chinese govt will be watching the proceedings closely in order to get ready in case China looses case and other countries start following suit (something GOI should take a cue from)

However India may not block solar products as almost 70% of the components Indian facilities come from China. Also Indian industry is still evolving despite being one of the most promising markets in the world for renewable energy. In fact total industry production was 900MW against a manufacturing capacity of 1500 MW, again due to influx of Chinese products.

One of the reasons that domestic industry did not evolve is because Indian government has not provided much needed financial backing, today Indian banks are hesitant to extend credit to Indian manufacturers and then government allowed introduction of thin film modules which kept Indian player out right from the start as there are no manufacturing facilities for thin film in India.

In view of weak domestic market and anti-dumping investigation isa welcoming step, finally little sunshine for Indian industry.
